1911/12: Italian Propaganda Leaflet printed in arabic air-dropped over Berber tribesmen in Libya during 1912, dated at Tripoli (Trablusgarb) in January 1912 and believed to have been first dropped in December 1912. Note: This War was the first in which powered aircraft were used for reconnaissance, bombing and the dropping of propaganda leaflets. 1925 (Aug 8): Potez 25 Demonstration Flight. Cover flown from France via Belgrade, Istanbul, Bucharest, Moscow (Aug 11), Warsaw, Copenhagen (Aug 12) and back to Le Bourget (Muller #134); franked by Pasteur 50 c. blue and 75 c. blue tied by 'Chaville' despatch cds. Cover was backstamped at the mentioned Capital Cities with 'Aya-Stefano' cds (Aug 10) when landing in Istanbul. A rarity of Flight covers, this superb demonstration by Pilot Arrachart was a huge success. A mere 35 covers carried, this example numbered '3' at left. 1914/22: Postcard of Captain Ismail Hakki, unused, the navigator and sole survivor of the four Turkish Aviators who attempted to fly in 1914 from Istanbul to Egypt. Hakki flew with Captain Nuri who was drowned off Jaffa.The two pilots of the other aeroplane on the flight were kiled in Syria on the previous day. A superb card, signed at lower left by Capt. In all probability this card was flown by CIDNA to Vienna and thence by train and not by AEI (Aero Espresso Italiana), nevertheless a scarce usage with just 61 items of mail carried. 1914: 20 paras red postal stationery card used from Artwin to Aleppo, showing fine strike of the emergency engraved bilingual datestamp ARTWIN well struck in black (Ziya/Bulent fig. 1 = RR), used for a brief period when the Turkish Army liberated the city from Russian occupying Forces: the cancellation has to be used from late November 1914 until early March 1914 only, upon the Turks retreating from the city on March 14, 1915 the city was torched and it is believed this and the previous Russian cancellations were all burnt in the inferno. A great rarity of Armenian, Russian and Ottoman philately.

Complete 'Gazette Des Absents' No. 16, mailed to Constantinople from beseiged Paris and franked by Dec 1870 Siège 40 c. orange tied by Paris Star, flown on Ballon 'Le Parmentier' and landed at Epernay (in Prussian occupied territory) where the mail was recovered by the local population. Mailed on via Marseille (Dec 29) and reverse showing clear 'Constantinople / Turquie' datestamp of receipt (January 7, 1871). Opens well for Exhibit display. Essay for the 40 para value in black on card paper, with arabic 'shehr postasi' inscription at right reading up (on the issued stamp this was reversed) and manuscript notation 'approved' at top and endorsed below the stamp 'Pink'. 1917 (Dec 15): 'Feldpostkarte' mailed from Smyrna to Berlin with handstamp in blue of Major Serno's Airforce Liason Unit based in Constantinople, and rare circular Unit handstamp, '5th Turkish Air Company' also struck in blue. Mailed with fine strike of 'Feldpost / Mil. Miss. / Smyrna' datestamp in black. Extremely rare from the nascent Turkish Airforce Unit. Ex collection Bill Robertson.
Note: A German Officer, Major Serno, was appointed to liase with the Turkish Airforce command. He had his own unit based in Constantinople.
