    1855: 1 d. red brown, Die 12, perf. 16, a single example and a horizontal block of ten (lettered PH/QL) all used on August 1855 cover from Newcastle on Tyne to Randers, Denmark, tied by "Newcastle on Tyne / 545" sideways duplexes in black. The cover is endorsed "via Hamburg" at base and travelled according to directions (rate of 8d. + 3d. for Elbe postage) and struck with framed "fr. Hbg." at lower left (Van Der Linden fig. 1557) as prepaid to Hamburg only. Reverse with Westgate cds in blue, London transit in red and Danish P.O. in Hamburg cds (Aug 13) and front with '9' (skilling) due on receipt. A superb multiple on a magnificent cover.

Mailed via Belgium and Danish P.O. in Hamburg (Nov 24) and also struck in Hamburg with italic "franco" at lower left (Van Der Linden fig. 1425). A marvellous entire in excellent quality. Cert. BPA (2007).
    Note: The effective rate was 10½d. per ½ ounce. No Halfpenny stamps had been issued at this date and the notation '6½' (silvergroschen) on the cover is a credit to the German Postal Union, with 2 sgr. credited to Denmark.

    1857 (Nov 3): Printed Prices Current mailed to Rendborg, Denmark from London, franked with Great Britain 1 d. red star (Gi Spec. C10) tied by London '25' numeral obliterator, alongside Denmark imperforate 1854 4 sk. red-brown cancelled by "2" circular numeral cancellation of Danish P.O. in Hamburg in black. Reverse with Aachen transit in red and Danish P.O. in Hamburg cds (Nov 6) in black. The cover was marked "½" in blue ink and charged "4" skilling due from recipient in red crayon as these combination covers (where the Danish postage had been applied in Great Britain) were no longer authorised due to the London-Altona Packet Service being withdrawn. An outstanding and most attractive entire with just three recorded similar frankings. Certificates Jakubek (1985), Nielsen (2003) and RPS (2004).
    Note: The Direct Packet to Altona / Hamburg was withdrawn on November 30, 1853. Mixed Frankings were still permitted because they did not transit any other countries and the bilateral agreement between Great Britain and Denmark was still in effect.

Reverse with London transit in red and Danish P.O. in Hamburg cds (May 7) in black. The cover was marked with "2" (skilling) in manuscript for Postage Due from the recipient. An oustanding and rare entire with just three recorded similar frankings. Cert. S. Kaiser (1984), Moller (2007).

    1864 (Feb 2): Underpaid cover from Dublin to Copenhagen franked solely by 1 d. red star (mailed a day after the declaration of the 2nd Schleswig Holstein War), struck with two line INSUFFICIENTLY / STAMPED in black and sent via Hamburg P.O. (Feb 5) to Copenhagen (Feb 9) - the unusual four day difference probably being explained by a routing via Waremünde and Malmö. The cover remained un-collected at the Copenhagen Post Restante until June 1864 with various manuscript charges for a total of 35 skilling due and was handstamped "Retour" in black. Returned to sender receiving framed SENT BACK TO ENGLAND / WITHOUT A REASON / FOR NON-DELIVERY in red. A fascinating and rare cover.

    1864 (March 19): Entire letter sent by direct ship to Copenhagen endorsed 'per Hull Steamer', due to the 2nd Schleswig Holstein War (declared Feb 1, 1864) from Hull to Copenhagen, struck with circular HULL SHIP-LETTER datestamp in black and franked at the normal rate via Ostend of 9 d. with 1855 1 d. red and 1858 2 d. blue pl. 9 (four examples) all tied by "383" Hull obliterators and by SKIBSBREV / KJOBENHAVN arrival datestamp (March 23). As the cover was sent by this unusual route there was no Mail accountancy and the cover was charged "9" skilling due in red crayon manuscript. Slight cover tear at base but a unique prepayment of the Danish share (6 d.) of the postage with British adhesives.

    1860 (Aug 16): Cover to Copenhagen with the extraordinary franking of diagonally bisected 1856 1 d rose red, 1855-57 4 d. rose and 6 d. lilac all tied by bold strikes of the London "47" numeral obliterator in black to pay the 10½ d. rate (the first British ½ d adhesive was not issued until 1870), with manuscript "6½" being the pence amount paid forward (British share was 4 d.) to cover the 2 silvergroschen credited to Denmark in Hamburg, noted at base of cover. Reverse with London cds in blue, Danish P.O. in Hamburg cds (Aug 18) in black and Copenhagen cds (Aug 19). Some ageing around perforations but a wonderful and important cover for the specialist. Certificates BPA (1989) and RPS (2003).

(Stamp Dealers of Rotherhithe, with embossed seal on reverse), mailed to Copenhagen, Denmark at 2½ d. rate with 1864/79 1 d. red pl. 194 vertical pair, lettered DI/EI and diagonally bisected single example all tied by London SE 10 duplexes in black with one corner of the bisect folded over the edge of cover but intact. Reverse with Danish Post Office violet adhesive label with five lines of print, instructing the addressee to use a fuller address. Minor ageing mentioned for accuracy only, but a marvellous and most unusual cover for the specialist.

Both stamps being applied in England on despatch: the rate being 2 d. to Hamburg and 2 sk. from Hamburg to Copenhagen. Extremely rare entire with just two examples known with 2 d.+ 2 sk. franking.     Note: Franked at 2 s. 6 d. for a quadruple rate letter. British share 1 s. 4 d., remainder carried forward for GAPU 1 s. 2 d. = 11.67 silvergroschen. Belgian and GPU share = 7 sgr.     The International Gold awarded one frame Exhibit of NEW ZEALAND PRISONER OF WAR AIR LETTER CARDS 1941 - 1945 formed by Barry Scott FRPSL showing all the recorded types of mint and/or used Air Letter Cards produced by the Government Printers in Wellington, initially issued on Monday Nov. 17th 1941, showing all nine issues with the recorded errors, varieties and wrappers known. The sixteen page exhibit starts each issue with a mint example, 7th issue with a complete set of five mint cards plus wrapper, continuing with earliest recorded usages including 1/6 d. stationery card used on Nov. 18th (2nd day of issue) to Germany, first issue card with un-watermarked variety used to Italy, uncommon usage and only recorded example to a civilian internee in Germany (1942), censored items, scarce 'six pence' double and inverted overprint on 6th and 7th issue Aug. '44 (one of only two known) as well as scarce 9th issue (on sale for a very short period, just six weeks) with one of only five used copies recorded. A magnificent exhibit, viewing highly recommended.
    During World War II over 9'000 New Zealand solders were captured by German or Italian Troops. For the Government it was a high priority  "... to have reliable, direct and effective air mail communication with the country's Prisoners of War". Special light-weight air-letter forms, today known as aerogrammes, were the solution. These new POW air letter cards quickly proved popular and the postage rate of 1/6d. on the first issue was reduced to 6d. by the 6th issue (August 1944). Today examples of any kind of these cards, whether mint or used are very scarce. Paper was a prime commodity in the camps and was recycled, either used as cigarette or toilet paper. Added to this was the fact that many prisoners were marched across Poland and Germany in front of the advancing Russian Army, carrying only a minimum of personal belongings, thus very few of these letter cards made it back home and survived.

    Great Britain used in Cyprus: 1878, 1d. brown postal stationery wrapper, cancelled with barred numeral '942' LARNACA used from Cyprus to Cairo, Egypt with arrival marking POSTE EGIZIANE CAIRO 23 DIC 78 on reverse, of finest possible quality! Postal stationery from GB used in Cyprus is extremely rare. The W.T.F. Castle handbook of Cyprus (1987 edition) only lists the 2d blue Registered envelope plus Post Cards of three different denominations and states:"..other items may exist". To date only two One Penny brown Postal stationery wrappers are recorded used in Cyprus (including this one offered here which is a new find made by Corinphila experts in 2012), the other known 1d. wrapper was found in 1994 and when offered on a London auction it was decribed as "...the only recorded...".     1859 (Oct 31): Entire letter from Alexandria to Aalborg, Denmark struck with two line COL VAPORE / ALESSANDRIA in black at top, the unpaid charge to Triest being 3¼ sgr and credit to GAPU being a further 3 sgr., therefore framed "6¼" in blue was applied at Trieste (Van Der Linden fig. 3092) for total amount in silvergroschen, equivalent to 27 Danish skilling + 9 sk. for Danish share on arrival = 36 sk. Reverse with Triest cds (Nov 10), two German TPO's and Danish P.O. in Hamburg cds (Nov 17). An unusual destination at this date.
