    1880/84: Naish 2 d. mauve and 4 d. rose-carmine, used eexample on underpaid 1883 cover to Naples tied by Melbourne duplex (May 9) and struck with triangular "T" marking in black. The cover was carried by the P&O "Carthage" to Colombo, the "Clyde" to Suez and thence from Alexandria by the "Tanjore" to Brindisi. Due to the Cholera epidemic in Egypt delioveries of Mail were refused and the "Tanjore" was directed for fumigation to Poveglia for disinfection near Venice. The mails were then transmitted via Malta (July 5) where slitted and struck with "PURIFIE AU LAZARET / MALTE" to Naples. Underpaid 1d. and taxed on arrival with Italy 1870 Postage Due 10 c. (2) tied in black (July 8).     1870: Essay for Stamp Statute 4 d. value, hand-painted in grey & sepia, with photographic print of hand-drawn head inserted at top, the perforations also hand-drawn, on thin card endorsed "1869" alongside the dated reverse of the Coin to correct the "1870" inscription; dated "17-11-70" on the reverse in ink. The above design was the subject of a letter from William Bell (19 Nov 1870) claiming that the engraving of the 4 d. coin obverse and reverse - required more work than the other values and desrved a 10% increase in his charges of £ 25. The additional payment was approved on 22 Nov 1870. Bell made an error on this handpainted design - which was faithfully copied on to the Die - spelling "BRITANNIA" as "BRITANNIAR".     1885/1895: Error of Colour, 4 d. lilac instead of magenta, the famous fine unused horizontal pair of this rare stamp, issued in error during December 1886, of excellent colour, well centred and with large part og. Trivial imperfections of no significance, an exceptional pair of great rarity, there being but 9 recorded unused examples - this pair being the finest of the two recorded pairs of this error and, indeed, the only horizontal one (the vertical pair is illustrated in "The Stamps of Victoria" by Geoff Kellow RDP on colour plate 15 and is not as fine).
