Katalognummer : 131865 (April 31): Registered cover from Vienna to Bucharest, franked by 1864 Arms 10 kr. blue, perf. 9½ in a vertical pair and single 15 kr. brown, perf 9½ tied by oval "Josefstadt Im Wien / Recomandirt" oval datestamps in black. On arrival in Bucharest the cover was re-addressed to the Hotel Binder in Jassy and Cuza 20 pa. red on white paper was applied and tied by grill obliterator in black with "Bucuresci" datestamp (13/5) alongside. Reverse with Bucharest datestamp (4/5) of initial arrival and "Jassy / Moldova" datestamp of receipt (10/5). Katalognummer : 17+192 bani orange (Transfer Type 8) and 4 bani blue (Transfer Type 5) used on 1870 Printed Matter entire letter from Bucharest to Vienna, each tied by "Bucuresti / Dim" datestamps (10/5) in black (Kiriac fig. 443). The 2 bani orange with large margins all round and the 4 bani close but clear at left; flap with "Josefstadt / Wien" arrival (14/5) datestamp. The entire is pre-paying the 5 bani rate for Printed Matter, however the stamps in use at the time would not have been able to correctly pre-pay the rate, as the 3 bani value was not issued until three days after this letter was posted. The 15 bani over-lapping the 3 bani which has a shaved margin at upper left, but a delightful and rare mixed issue usage of great visual appeal. Katalognummer : 194 bani deep blue, four examples used on magnificent 1871 cover from Bucharest to Madame Stourdza at Skiéa, Tirgu-Frumos; the adhesives in two horizontal pairs (Transfer Types 5-6 and 1-2) with left hand pair just touched into outer frame-line at top and all tied by "Bucuresci" datestamps (Feb 20) in black. Framed "P.D." at lower right and reverse with "Tirgu Frumos" arrival cds (24/2) in black. A wonderful cover and a rare over-franking: the rate at this time was 10 bani per ½ ounce (decree of October 3/15, 1870); however 6 bani was not a great deal of money to the rich 'boyar' Stourdza family: for a further example of this over-payment see lot 5155 in the "Cornelia" sale, Corinphila 149, Feb 2007.
