1870/71: Bordeaux issue 10 c. bistre (report 1), 20 c. blue (type III, report 2), and huge margined 40 c. orange all used on small envelope with original contents written by a sailor on U.S.S.Plymouth written at Ville Franche, mailed from Nice (Feb 13) to Philadelphia, USA via London (Feb 22). Very rare three colour Bordeaux issue usage, also note the time taken between Nice and London due to the turbulent state of Paris just after the Siege-usually a two day journey, this cover taking nine days. '2 Cents' in red at left applied on arrival. A very scarce and attractive cover. Signed Calves. Cert. Vachat (2010).
Note: Interesting contents in english 'today all I wanted was to get stamps on the letter containing your draft and put it in the right box..from the Post Office I went up to where they were playing Base Ball...' and also regarding the use of Steven's Forwarding Agent to get mail.

1/2 gr. orange (2), one from 1st, one from 2nd plate, in addition 1 gr. green-darkolive, 3rd plate, all on Naples paper, tied by three strikes of framed handstamp to letter from Giarra to Messina. The two 1/2 gr. stamp were reused to defraud the post in the office of Giarre and show therefore some small imperfections, a rare letter with fine postal history content, impressive due to the use of 1/2 gr. from different plates. Certificates Enzo Diena (1987) and Raybaudi (1994) Sassone = EUR 34'400.

15 c. bright rose, Handpaper, Type III, a magnificent used example with huge margins all round and showing complete Andrew's Cross / Croce di S. Andrea at base and small portion of adjoining cross at right, neatly cancelled by MILANO 13/9 datestamp in black. Imperceptible dent in the paper on reverse and barest trace of paper loss in margin mentioned for technical accuracy only and of no significance, this being a stamp of both great rarity and beauty. This describer has recorded just three examples of the 15 centesemi with Andrew's Cross used in Milan (two single examples and a vertical pair) of which this is undoubtedly the finest. A wonderful stamp for the philatelic connisseur. Signed Giorgio Colla. Cert. Colla (2000) Sassone = EUR 80'000.
