    Messageries Impériales 1876 (Nov 20): Entire letter from La Guaira to Santander, Spain, endorsed "per St. Guyane", franked by Venezuela 1876 ½ r. rose pair (Scott 47) tied by "CORREOS LA GUAIRA" handstamp in black and, for onward transmission with France 1870 Siège 40 c. orange and Type Sage 30 c. brown in a horizontal pair tied by octagonal "LA GUAYRA" Consular datestamps (Nov 20) in black (Salles fig. 1374). Carried on the Ligne E Steamer "Guyane" to Fort de France with octagonal "LIGNE B / PAQ. FR. No. 4" datestamp (Nov 29) displaying well on reverse (Salles fig. 1432) and thence on the "Ville de Bordeaux", taxed on arrival with circular "1P 30" in blue.     RMSP & PSNC 1857 (Aug 22): Pacific route cover from Sydney, New South Wales to Edinburgh, endorsed "P. Gannymede via Callao" franked by 1854/59 6 d. greyish-brown (2) imperforate, margins touched to fine, tied by mute obliterators in black. The cover travelled to Callao where forwarded on PSNC Steamer to Panama, thence via the RMSP "Dee" from Colon to St. Thomas and "La Plata" to Southampton. Reverse with Sydney datestamp, London transit (Nov 14), Edinburgh and Prestonpans cds (Nov 16) where charged "1/-" due to pay. Adhesives originally folded over the side of the envelope and opened for better display; a rare routing across the Pacific via Callao, annotated at left "Received (via Callao) on 16th Nov in 86 days".

Carried on PSNC Steamer to Panama, thence on the "Nile" to Plymouth. 'London / Paid' arrival cds (March 17) in red also tied the 10 d. adhesive. Le Havre arrival on reverse of a rare three issue, three colour franking. Top flap partly missing and envelope strengthened below the franking. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 191. Reverse with double arc TRINIDAD datestamp (Jan 9) and thence per RMSP "Conway" to Barbados and the "Derwent" to St. Thomas with ST. THOMAS (Jan 14) cds in black. Trans-shipped from the "Clyde" in Havana with "STEAMSHIP / 10" arrival on obverse. File fold affects one stamp but a cover of outstanding appearance. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 170. Cert. Reverse with 'New York / Paid All' duplex of entry (Dec 28). Illustrated in Edition 59 on page 111. A fine and scarce cover.rnNote: The British P.O.'s in Buenos and Montevideo were closed in July 1873, however British stamps were sold by the British Consul until Argentina joined the UPU on April 1, 1878. The rates of Postage for each leg accumulated from 30 to 70 to 110 to an eventual '150' reis due upon receipt. Triangular 'T' marking and passed to French Office with rare octagonal "PANAMA / LIG. A. PAQ. FR. No. 1" datestamp in red (Salles fig. 1413 bis), thence on "Le Washington" from Colon to St. Nazaire with arrivals on reverse (Aug 24) and charged '12' décimes handstruck. Carried on the vessel "Portales" to Callao. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 183. Rare and very fine.rnNote: With the absence of docketing, one must assume the cover to be an 1844 usage. However it is known the datestamp broke in 1843 or 1844 and the '43' or '44' slugs were never changed during the life of the cancellation thereafter. For an example of the altered state of the cancellation see the Berkinshaw-Smith collection (Corinphila sale 145) lot 3186 and two further lots in this sale.rnrnrnrnrn

FR. J No. 2" datestamp (Feb 29) in black (Salles fig. 1072). Carried on Paquebot "Sindh" to Bordeaux with Arnstadt arrival cds (April 1) on reverse.     1853-1877. The Red Cross Line also sailed from Liverpool to Northern Brazil in competition with the Booth Line, initially with sailing ships and then with Steamers. However the two Companies agreed not to coincide departure dates for their services. rnrn1853 (Aug 23): Entire letter from Pará to Porto, Portugal endorsed by sailing ship "Pr. Paraense", struck with "Barca do Porto" on arrival in blue (Oct 10) and charged '160' reis in blue. The entire disinfected with slits and taking 48 days on the voyage; and an 1872 Steamer voyage with entire from Pará to Figueira, Portugal endorsed "Por Maranhense", the reverse with "Por Transtlantico" datestamp (June 16) and charged '80' reis due, taking just 16 days. This last illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 84 and ex the Reinhold Koester collection.

    Companhia de Navegação a Vapor Luso-Brasiliera, 1854-1857. The company, formed by Brazilian and Portuguese investors had two Transatlantic Steamers: D. Maria II and D. Pedro II, which made 8 and 6 round-trip voyages respectively. This line again failed to be able to compete with the RMSP and was discontinued after two years in service.rnrn1855 (Jan 23): Entire letter from Bahia to Porto, Portugal endorsed "Vapor D. Maria 2a", and struck with fine oval COMPANHIA DE PAQUETES A VAPOR / LUSO-BRASILEIRA / ¨BAHIA" in blue and charged '280' reis due on arrival, reverse with "P. Transatlantico" cds (Feb 17) with year error (54) in black and Porto arrival. Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 60. A very scarce entire.rnrn

    1870-1877. Liverpool & Maranham Steam Ship Company. Inaugurated by the Steamer Brunswick in December 1870, sailing from Liverpool to Lisbon and then Maranhão. They ran just the two Steamers: the Brunswick and the Braganza with no furether stops on the route.rnrn1873 (Sept 25): Entire letter from Maranhão to Porto, Portugal endorsed "Braganza" at top, franked by 1866 Dom Pedro 20 r. red lilac and 80 r. slate-violet tied by oval handstamp in black with oval "ADMINISTRAÇÃO DO CORREIO GERAL DO MARANHÃO" in blue (Sept 27). Charged '80' reis in black upon arrival with reverse showing Lisbon "Por Transatlantico" in black (Oct 11) and Porto cds (Oct 15). A fine and scarce entire.     1866-1867 The Booth Line, was formed by Alfred Booth and became a long-lived Shipping Co. It was the first private Company to serve the North of Brazil, with stops at Pará, Maranhão and Ceara and Lisbon. The service required an initial investment in two Steamers, the Augustine and the Jerome, inaugurated by the Steamer "Augustine" in February 1866.rnrn1867 (Oct 24): Entire letter from  Pará to Figueira, Portugal endorsed "p. Jerome" at top. The reverse with rare framed "GRAMPARÁ" (Ayres fig. 1311) handstamp in black unfortunately across the flap, "Por Transatlantico" cds in black (Nov 28) and charged '80' reis in black. Prepaid at double rate (640 reis) but found to be triple and struck with oval "INSUFFICIENTE" in red. Reverse with Rio transit (Feb 21) and St. Michel de Maurienne arrival cds (March 26).     French Military Concessionary Rate 1861 (Nov 17): Large part cover at Military Concession rate from Montevideo to France bearing 1853 20 c. blue, shaved at top, margins on three sides, tied by dotted Anchor lozenge in black. Carried by the Brazilian Ship "Diligent" (replacing the "Saintonge") to Rio de Janeiro. Transferred there and struck with octagonal "CORRESP. D. ARMÉES / NAVARRE" datestamp (Nov 17) in black (Salles fig. 1028) and, alongside, circular "BÉARN / *" datestamp (same day) in black (Salles fig. 1001). The adhesives further tied on arrival by '2' due marking for local delivery in blue crayon. Reverse with Lima cds and manuscript "Rec'd Dec 31, 72". Carried by the packet "Windsor Castle" and charged "1'980" reis due to pay upon arrival (this extraordinary amount would be reduced in 1812 to just 120 reis), internal docketing of receipt (Oct 26). Illustrated in Edition D'Or XXXVII on page 60. A superb and early entire in the foremost quality.

    SGTM 1875 (Oct 20): Cover from Buenos Aires to Milan, Italy franked by Argentina 1868 Rivadavia 5 c. vermilion, with imprint, tied by "Buenos Aires / OM" despatch cds (Oct 20), and by Italy "Estero" 30 c. brown and 40 c. carmine, in expectation of sailing on the Italian ship "Cristofo Colombo". The letter missed the sailing and was carried by the SGTM Steamer "France" direct to Marseille with 'Plata /Marseille' entry mark in red (Nov 16). Taxed on receipt as entirely unpaid with defective 1870 Italy 1 lire Postage Due tied by Milan cds (Nov 18). Illustrated in Edition D'Or 59 on page 116. Some faults but an unusual cover.
