1925 (April 29): T. C. Pounds Provisional Airmail 25 c. on 1919 1 c. brown and 25 c. on 1919 2 c. red, no wmk. perf. 11½, each overprinted "AERO / CORREO / 25 / CENTAVOS" in black, prepared for the first Honduras flight due on May 1st. Fresh and fine unused examples of each, large part og. Extremely rare - just two unused examples of each stamp are recorded. Signed Kessler and Sanabria. Cert. Moorhouse (2011) Sanabria = $ 13'000.rnrnNote: The original airmail rate was fixed at 25 centavos per gram. There was no time to prepare a permanent issue and T. C. Pounds (owner of the one aeroplane in Honduras at the time) asked a local printer, Karl Snow to overprint the issue on previous definitives. Snow prepared his overprint (in a forme of 12) for the 1919 Morazan statue issue but the remainders of this proved to be too few and the format of the overprint, as shown here, would not fit the 1915 horizontal format 'Bridge' and 'Theatre' issues where there were stamps still available from Post Office stocks. The issue was therefore utilised and the above stamps are recorded used and the 25 c. on 1 c. chocolate is known on letter. The two stamps above are, therefore some of the rarest airmail unused stamps ever issued.rnrn

1854 (May 20): Cover from New York addressed to Capt. Thos. Cupper of the Steamer 'Cortes' at San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, endorsed at top "p. Steamer Star of the West", struck with fine oval "NICARAGUA LINE / IN ADVANCE / OF THE MAIL" handstamp in black. Short original letter enclosed. Rare.rnrnNote: "Star of the West" was a 1,172-ton steamship built by Jeremiah Simonson, of New York City for Cornelius Vanderbilt, and launched on June 17, 1852. She started service between New York and San Juan de Nicaragua on October 20, 1852 and continued the service for Charles Morgan from July 1853 to March 1856. In January 1861, she was chartered to the War Department. On January 9, 1861, weeks after South Carolina declared that it had seceded from the United States, but before other states had done so to form the Confederacy, "Star of the West" arrived at Charleston Harbor to resupply Major Robert Anderson's garrison at Fort Sumter. The ship was fired upon by cadets from the Citadel Academy and was hit three times by what were effectively the first shots of the American Civil War.

Wreck Mail 1887/88: 10 c. black on yellow, single example tied to 1892 cover to Vienna endorsed 'via New York' by Colon duplex in blue (Jan 13). Carried on the ill-fated North German Lloyd Steamer 'Eider' which sank off the Isle of Wight with much heroism displayed by the RNLI in saving the passengers and crew on board on January 31. The envelope struck with framed "Gehoben aus dem / geschetterten Schiff / "Eider" in violet with 'Franco' in black applied to denote payment. Reverse with New York transit cds (Jan 21) and Austrian P.O. Reseal label and arrival cds (March 9). Interesting article accompanies a fine and rare cover.rnrnNote: Friedrich Trump, grandfather of 45th U.S. President Donald Trump, emigrated from Bremen, Germany, to New York aboard the 'Eider' in 1885 at the age of 16. He made his fortune running brothels during the Klondike Gold Rush. Returning to Bavaria he was accused of avoiding the Military draft and denied citizenship and returned to the USA.

1859: Thin Figures 80 c. orange-yellow, a fine example with ample to large margins all round showing the extraordinary Plate Flaw "180 CENTESIMOS" for "80" used on cover to Montevideo. The Plate was made from the 180 c. Stone and this error results from an improperly prepared cliché. The adhesive neatly tied by circular 'scarab' handstamp in black leaving the variety clear at top, with circular 'Renta de Correos / Salto' datestamps alongside (Oct 21) in black. An extraordinary cover - the sole known usage of this variety (Error of Colour!) on letter.rnrnProvenance: Collection Henry C. Gibson.
