Postal Forgery 1932: 2 d. scarlet, Postal Forgery on unwatermarked paper, perf. 11, an unused block of four of this exceptional forgery but for the perforations it may well have gone undetected for a longer period of time. The forgeries were used in Sydney in March and April 1932 for mailing forged Irish Sweepstakes tickets. A recipient, a Dr. E. C. Black, noticed the differences and asked the Post Office if this was a new issue. The perpetrator Charles Jackson and the engraver, Henry Elderfield, were eventually jailed after sending Dr. Black his forged tickets on an envelope franked by a similarly forged Sydney Harbour Bridge 2 d. adhesive. This rare block is fine and most attractive, with one or two tiny age spots on large part gum, lower pair unmounted og. rare BW 103cc = $ 4'800.rnrnProvenance: Harmers, London, 27 Nov 1980, lot 1310; Prestige, Melbourne, 13 June 2009, lot 48.
