    1881: Quetzal 5 c. red and green, used on mourning cover to Antigua, tied by "Diligencias/De/Vazquez-Ubico" company oval handstamp in black, being the Vazquez-Ubico Stagecoach service, backflap missing, some edge tears to the border, extremely rare cover with only two recorded, this being the better example.rnRemark: The Diligencias operated routes between towns in Guatemala as early as 1851. They carried mail as a Private Carrier and later under contract with the Post Office. In 1881 the Post Office decreed that the Diligencias Co. could no longer operate outside of the Post Office and that all mail would have postage applied, which were available at a 3 percent commission. Goodman suggests this must have continued for a very short period and only the 5 c. Quetzal is known with Diligencias cancels. rnrnProvenance: Ex.     1880: Quetzal Proofs, selection of three comprising, a minisheet showing six vingettes of the Quetzal in deep-green printed on thin white paper by the 'American Banknote Company.', imprint below, has a tear damage into lower right, as well as an example with two vignettes of the Quetzal in the same shade and paper, also an imperf. Proof of the 10 c. gray-violet and green, printed on thick gummed paper, good to large margins, very attractive; additionally 1949 the 'Birds and the Postage Stamp', Hélio-Vaugirard reproduction of the 1 c. black and green, printed on a large minisheet, very fresh and fine. A useful and attractive lot.

    1881: Quetzal 2 c. brown and green, two complete sheets of 100 from different plates and frames, with marginal surround and both imprints top and bottom, both showing gradual misalignment of the central bird resulting in misplacement of the green into "Centavos" towards the bottom of the sheet, one the plate number is positioned over stamp 4 and 5, the other above stamp 5, some slight soiling and minor imperfections, most interesting and very fine examples.
