Northern Territory 1826 (Sept 29): Entire letter from Fort Dundas, Melville Island in the Timor Sea off the Northern Territory, written by Dr. John Gold to his mother in Ashford, Kent and struck with framed step type "PORTSMOUTH / SHIP LETTER" in black (Robertson S13) and charged '1/6d.' due to pay upon arrival (22 June 1827). The contents (full transcript with the lot) "I left Sydney the capital of New South Wales on the 16th August and arrived here after a pleasant voyage on the 16th of September...I am residing in a fort, but you must not fancy it like those in England. It is merely a mound of earth thrown up with a ditch outside and a square enclosure within...this is so unfrequented a part of the world that it is a matter of difficult accomplishment to get away even if I felt desirous to do so...the climate is favourable to the production of disease...the hospital is a small but comfortable building capable of holding from 16 to 20 sick and it is generally full. The men have suffered lately from scurvy malignant fever and other endemic diseases of a dangerous character... Scarcely a week elapses but our men are endangered by visits of the Aborigines who are very wild and hostile in spite of all the kindness we can possibly show them...we cannot go a quarter mile from (the Fort) without a dog or a gun, both of which the natives dread...the population consists of Officers and 40 soldiers of the 57th, 5 women (soldiers wives), 30 marines and about 100 convicts". After the Commandant (Major Campbell of the 57th Regiment) pleaded for the garrison to be relieved from "this vile island", in February 1829 Fort Dundas and Melville Island were abandoned to their original occupants. It was, however, too late for the writer of this letter as Dr. John Gold was killed by Aborigines in late 1827, dying from no less than 31 spear wounds. A magnificent entire with extraordinary content from the first occupation of the island by a non-indigenous people, Fort Dundas lasted a mere four years (1824-1829) prior to being abandoned. An historic and important letter: the sole surviving letter in private hands from the first settlement in the Northern Territory.rnProvenance: Collection Daneswood, Prestige, 24 May 2008; Prestige, 27 July 2009, lot 1037.

They took all the sheep from them and though they sent a body of Mounted Police to try to recover some of the sheep, they could not find any of them, but the Shepherds and men all got away from the Blacks without harm but one, and the Blacks carried one away on their backs and left him for dead but he recovered and had nothing but a dogs tongue to eat for 5 days....the Blacks are all civil for above 100 miles beyond me. I hear that the Government at home talk of bringing them under the Law, they may as soon as catch the old horses at home and learn them to talk. Brother Jere and family are all well except Arthur, he was killed with a kick from a horse last March. Jere expects his Liberty next December in the District."

1863/74: Octagonal 1 s. deep blue on blued on Saunders paper, a sheet marginal example used on 1871 cover endorsed "via Trieste" to Basel, Switzerland, the endorsement corrected to "via Brindisi", tied by barred numeral "10" of Warrnambool in black. Framed "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / VIA BRINDISI" in black due to a second stamp, probably a 3 d. adhesive, being lost in transit, possibly before reaching Melbourne where the marking was applied. 'London / Paid' transit (April 21) in red and backstamped at Warrnambool (Feb 25), Melbourne (Feb 28) and in Basel. Illustrated and discussed in the Ben Palmer census on page 181. The previous owner of the cover believed that a second stamp, probably a 3 d. adhesive was lost in transit, possibly before reaching Melbourne where the due marking was applied. However there is no evidence as to where the 3 d. adhesive was placed unless applied over the selvedge at right. This describer believes the cover was correctly franked for the Trieste rate for a ¼ ounce letter and whilst the endorsement was altered, no further stamps were applied for the Brindisi increment.

Recess by Perkins Bacon 1855: Prepared for use but Unissued - Perkins Bacon 1 s. violet, wmk. Large Star, imperforate, an unused example with ample to large margins all round, minor corner bend at lower right corner not detracting from the appearance. Considered too close in colour to the issued 6 d. value, all the few examples of this stamp (incl. the six Ormond Hill "Cancelled" examples) are originally from a block of 24 left over and found after the balance of these stamps were destroyed on 5 June 1857 in the presence of the Assistant Treasurer and Auditor General. From the eighteen stamps, four are in institutional collections and Michael Blake and Tony Presgrave located the whereabouts of 15 examples, leaving eleven in private hands. What must also be pointed out is that none of these 24 stamps ever actually reached South Australia. An exceptionally rare stamp and a British Commonwealth and Australasian rarity. Cert. 1849: Second sheet of letter endorsed "Free" in manuscript from Perth to York, signed at lower left by Revett Henry Bland (Acting Colonial Secretary in 1849 until March 1850 - hence the Free franking privilege), struck with heavily inked impression of "♛ / GENERAL / POST OFFICE / PERTH" handstamp in black. The letter, in poetic form, mentions the attempted assassination attempt on Queen Victoria, presumably the incident involving William Hamilton, who was found guilty of the attempt and transported for seven years (there were in fact eight attempts on Queen Victoria's life) - "the occasion did but give the Queen alarm, for God preserved her Majesty from harm". File folds do not detract from a scarce cover.rnrnNote: Revett Henry Bland (1811-1894), an early settler in Western Australia, arriving aged 18 in August 1829 on the "Marquis of Angelsey". He was appointed resident at York in 1834 and local Protector of the Aborigines in 1841. Acting Colonial Secretary in 1849 until June 1850, he then went back to England and returned to Victoria and was resident director of the Port Philip and Colonial Gold Mining Co. in Melbourne and director of the National Bank between 1863 and 1865.rnrnProvenance: Collection 'Fremantle', Prestige, Melbourne, 11 July 2008, lot 693.

Our cattle and sheep being speared and carried off by the natives and the Police too weak to resist the attacks - the settlers being obliged to do Police duty themselves.
