'giallo arancio scuro', two fresh adhesives with fair to large margins, well embossed, tied by light "FIRENZE 25 GEN 61" cds, framed PD alongside, on envelope to St. Petersburg. Reverse with Milano transit (Jan 26), Chur - St. Gallen ambulant (Jan 28), Leipzig - Berlin ambulant (Jan 30) and St. Petersburg arrival (Jan 23, julian) datestamps and handwritten 'wfr 3' (silbergroschen) credited for the journey beyond Prussia. Due to small envelope size the two adhesives are glued at or over the edge of the cover, nevertheless an attractive and interesting franking paying correctly the 100 c. single rate to Russia via the German-Austrian Postal Union, in this case from the Toscana prior to the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy. 'carminio scuro' from plate I, the positions 92, 21 with retouche and 21 from the respective plates, three superb examples with fair to huge margins all round, all in a deep vivid shade, tied by clear strikes of the 'ferro di cavallo' handstamp to entire letter from Messina to Paris with 'direct' vessel. Despatch datestamp (May 15, 1859) and boxed "P.D." as well as indistinct Marseille entry cds in red alongside. Reverse with French ambulant and Paris arrival (May 20) cds's. A gorgeous franking, correctly paying the 35 grana rate from Sicily to places in France beyond Marseille in the Franco-Bourbon convention of January 1854, the cover made its journey on board of the vessel 'Meandre' of the Messageries Imperiales.     1815 (Feb 11): Noble autographed Entire letter sealed on both sides, written by Queen Charlotte (1744 - 1818), the queen consort of the British King George III, written in St. James Palace in London. It is directed to the King of the Two Sicilies and congratulates on the birth of princess Maria Antonia (1814-1898), who later became Grand Duchess of Tuscany from 1833 to 1859 as the consort of Leopold II.rnNote: The text says: "Sir my Brother. It is with infinite pleasure I congratulate Your Majesty on the birth of a Princess which your Dear Daughter in Law the Infanta of Spain and Hereditary Princess of the two Sicilies has by the help of Divine Providence brought into the World on the 19th of December 1814 and which you have named Antonia Maria Anna, and I very sincerely share with Your Majesty the Joy which this happy Event has occassioned you and your Royal Family.     1859: 20 c. dark blue with extremely rare variety: inverted embossing of the King's head 'effigie capovolta', a superb adhesive with good to large margins, the inverted head very well embossed and only lightly tied by "MILANO 12 SET. 60" cds, on entire letter to Verona, a crisp information strike alongside, reverse with wreathed VERONA arrival cds of the next day. Between June 1859 and February 1862 mail between Sardinia and Venetia and vice versa could only be prepaid to the respective border station while the receiver had to pay the residual journey upon receipt. In this case '5' soldi had to be paid for the first Austrian rayon. Light horizontal file fold well away from the adhesive just mentioned for accuracy, a most attractive cover with this sought after rarity, in addition on an entire sent to Venetia. Obverse is struck with "P.D.", two French entry cds's (July 4) added in Paris, one with "SARDAIGNE CULOZ", the other erroneously "ESPAGNE St. JEAN-DE-LUZ", an indistinct NEW YORK cds, and framed "Br. SERVICE" handstamp, all in red. Reverse with Paris - Calais ambulant cds (July 4) in black. The fragile cover paper was split and stabilized with Japan paper from the inside, some aging present, nevertheless a most interesting usage and a rare franking for a cover of more than 15 gram to the United States via France and British vessel.     Regno, combination usage of Sardinian and Italian adhesives 1863 (Jan 19): Registered lettersheet from Ariano to Napoli, bearing Sardinia IV. emission 5 c. green and 10 c. bistre orange in mixed franking with Italy Regno I. emission 40 c. red carmine, three fine and fresh adhesives, tied by clear Bourbon-style ARIANO cds in black (Sassone AV = 5 punti), a clear information strike and ASSICURATA handstamp in black alongside. Reverse with NAPOLI arrival cds of the next day. A splendid three-colour franking, signed A. Diena; certs. E. Diena (1988); Serra (2005). Zanaria & Serra 0,55 D1 = € 6'500.rnNote: The franking is incorrect, as the letter rate was 15 centesimi plus 30 centesimi for the registration. For a single letter rate this letter is overpaid by 10 centesimi, for a second letter rate it is underpaid by 5 centesimi. As the inland rates were reduced on January 1st, 1863, it may be that the sender or the postal cleark was only aware of the letter rate reduction, not of the reduction of the registration fee from 40 to 30 centesimi.

    Italian Post in Alexandria - Egypt, Usage of Italian stamps 1872 (Feb 11): Envelope from Cairo via Alexandria to Pesaro, endorsed "Via Brindisi", bearing Egypt 1872 Penasson 1 pi. rose-red (Gi 31), tied by "POSTE VICE REALI EGIZIANE / CAIRO 11 FEB 1872" cds with information strike alongside. Upon arrival in Alexandria a horizontal pair of the Italian definitive 1867 Torino printing 20 c. blue was added to the cover which was tied by light '234' numeral obliterator in black, "ALESSANDRIA D'EGITTO / POSTE ITALIANE 11 FEB 72" cds and alongside, which tied in addition the Egyptian adhesive. Reverse with additional strike of the Italian PO in Alexandria, ANCONA transit as well as PESARO (Feb 16) arrival cds's. Roughly opened at top and left, skillfully adjusted, an attractive combination franking of Egyptian and Italian definitives, where each issue was necessary to pay the journey from Cairo to Alexandria and from Alexandria onwards, respectively. An impressive franking, correctly paying the 34 grana rate from Sicily to places in the second Dutch rayon in the Franco-Bourbon convention of January 1854, the cover made its journey on board of the vessel 'Hermus' of the Messageries Imperiales. Front struck by two-line "VENEZIA 26 AGOo" despatch cds, another strike of the Raccomandata handstamp as well as Sardinian "A.2" postal treaty handstamp in red. Reverse with "GENOVA 29 AGO 50" arrival cds in red. Horizontal file fold, cover opened up for presentation purposes, nevertheless a rare usage with the postage unpaid and the registration paid, also a rare cancellation of the adhesive. Signed A. The obverse is struck by "FERRARA 7 SET. 59" despatch cds and ASSICURATA handstamp, reverse with "S.M. MADDALENA 7 SETe" transita datestamp at the border and MASSA arrival cds of the next day. Backflap shortened and repaired, opened up for presentation purposes, nevertheless an exceptional item full of postal history content incl. a usage in the first week of the Romagna issue, a rare registered mailing to Venetia with 4 baj. for the postage and 5 baj. registration fee in a rate valid only for two months in September and October 1859. Certs. Reverse with two ambulant cds's and "FIRENZE RACCOMANDATO" cds (Aug 6) in black. Cover slightly tatty, some perforation irregularities, but an interesting and correct franking. Signed A. Diena; cert. Diena (1986) Sassone = € 16'000.rnNote: A commercial cover paying exactly the rate with 20 c. for the postage, 30 c. registration fee and 10 c. for an insured value of 100 lire or parts thereof, in this case 150 centesimi which make in total 200 centesimi. Some imperfections as to be expected for an item of that sheer size, nevertheless an amazing franking for a cover between 640 - 660 gram paying 60 l. for the first weight rate plus 32 times 35 l. for the consecutive rates, 65 l. registration fee and 134 times the airmail surtaxe of 135 l., in total 19'360 lire. Sassone = € 11'350 on cover.

A most interesting commercial cover from the Pirelli correspondence, correctly franked with 3 l. for a third letter rate cover abroad plus 1.50 l. registration fee plus 12 times 9.75 l. for each 5 gram for the Airmail transport to Brasil with a French Airmail carrier, in total 121,50 lire, paid with seven different values. Certs.     1868 (July 7): Envelope from the 'MINISTERO DI MARINO' in Firenze, directed to the Chief Commander of the Italian Naval Division of South America in Montevideo, bearing 1866 Torino printing 40 c. rose-carmine and 60 c. lilac, two fine and fresh adhesives, tied by light '12' numeral obliterator, FIRENZE despatch cds, "P.P." handstamp in black and French "ITALIE 10 JUIL. LANSLEBOURG" entry cds alongside. Reverse with blue cachet of the Italian Ministry of the Navy and "TORINO - SUSA" ambulant cds. Minor toning and some edge wear just mentioned for accuracy, a most interesting piece of postal history, the franking paying the 100 centesimi rate via Great Britain to the port in Uruguay. However the cover does not show any taxation for the last part of the journey from the port to the addressee (who was presumably at the port).

Obverse struck with French "SARDAIGNE ANTIBES 7 JANV. 54" entry cds and "P.D." handstamp, both in red, reverse with Paris transit (Jan 10) and arrival (Jan 11) cds's. The pair with minor scuff at left due to its position at the cover edge, nevertheless an appealing cover with the 50 c. rate to France. Cert. E.     1850 (June 18): Entire letter written in Ferrara, Papal States, despatched at the the post office in Santa Maria Maddalena, Venezia and directed to Trieste, bearing Carta a mano 45 c. sky blue type I from the first print run, a fresh and fine adhesive with good to large margins all round, tied by rare three line "S. M. / Maddalena 18 GIUo" datestamp (Sassone RO = 8 punti), reverse with arrival datestamp (June 20). A most interesting entire writen in the Papal States which have not been part of the Austrian - Italian Postal Treaty prior to November 1852. Therefore the letter was posted in S. M. Maddalena on the northern side of the river Po in Venezia and franked correctly with 45 centesimi for the third rayon. Also a very early usage in the first month after issuing. Sassone = € 650 + 675 + 1'200.

    1878 (May 27): Stationery postcard 6 c. rose, sent from Luxemburg and directed to Lichtenstein, Saxonia bearing as additional franking 1875 Arms perforated 2 c. black and 5 c. lemon-yellow, fresh and fine examples, tied by LUXEMBOURG despatch cds. An attractive stationery postcard in the UPU system, full of postal history content, attractive and very rare. Signed E. Diena (1981).rnNote: When Luxemburg joined the GPU later UPU in July 1875, the postcard rate to other member of the postal union was set to half the letter rate abroad, i.e. at 12½ centimes. However, mail to Germany could be sent at a reduced rate of 12½ c. for a single rate letter and 6 c. for a postcard. The present postcard was issued at that rate for exactly this purpose and shows the imprint "Nach Deutschland / Pour Allemagne". Why the sender decided to uprate this card to approximately the general postcard rate is not clear.

Reverse with arrival cds of the following day and oval 'SV' handstamp. The heavy cover was split horizontally far away from the franking, the two halfs rejoined and part of the address redrawn, nevertheless an amazing three-colour franking paying 23 cr. or 1 Lira toscana & 11 crazie. 'azzuro oltramare', two fresh and fine examples with good to large margins, tied by OSTIANO despatch cds, information strike and intaglio handstamp of the "FORANIA ARCHIPRET. CAP. OSTIANI" alongside. Reverse with Milano - DESENZANO ambulant and Brescia transit as well as MANTOVA arrival (March 28) cds's. Up to May 1862, letters from Sardinia to Austria could only be paid to the border and were taxed for the residual journey. In this case, however, the sender had franked the letter to the bishop of Mantova at twice the normal rate which was accepted as full prepayment to the receiver and the due of '5' soldi was erased. The "Lecco Notte" datestamp was in use until March 1860.

In March 1851 Verdi wrote the music for Rigoletto. This was the first of a sequence of three operas (followed by Il trovatore and La traviata) which were to cement his fame as a master of opera.

    Regno, combination usage of Sardinian and Italian adhesives 1863 (Feb 6): Envelope from Narni to Roma, bearing Sardinia IV. emission 5 c. 'verde cupo' in mixed franking with Italy Regno Tipo Sardegna 15 c. blue, two fine and fresh adhesives. The 15 c. was first sticked on the letter as a single franking and tied Papal States grill obliterator. Thereafter the Sardinian 5 c. adhesive was added to pay the correct 20 c. rate to the Papal border and tied by NARNI cds (Sassone TR = 6 punti). Reverse with ROMA arrival cds of the next day. Cover was taxed upon arrival with '3' bajocchi. A fresh and attractive cover full of postal history content. Cert. Fiecchi (1958).
