1861. Cancelled Stamps for Rowland Hill’s nephew Ormond Hill.rnOn 18 April 1861 Ormond Hill, the nephew of Rowland Hill, wrote to Joshua Butters Bacon the head of Perkins Bacon and Co.:rn“My dear Sir, Two or three of my friends who are collectors of Postage Stamps have asked me to procure for them specimens of new or uncommon stamps whenever I have it in my power. It occurs to me that perhaps you may be able to give me a few ...”rnHe added on 24 April:rn“... I should be glad to have six stamps of each kind ...”rnOn 15 August J. Upham (for J.B. Bacon) sent the stamps to Pearson Hill with the following letter:rn“Dear Sir, I beg now to send you as promised ... an envelope addressed to Ormond Hill Esq. containing 6 obliterated impressions of each of the stamps named in the list and request you will take two of each for Rowland Hill Esq. and yourself and then seal the package and forward it together with a letter which you will also find addressed to him, to Mr. Ormond Hill.”rnIt turned out that the supply of the Crown Agents‘ property was given without authority.rnOrmond Hill was not asked to return the „specimens“, and in fact, all were treated as private property. Nevertheless, the case destroyed Perkins Bacon as future printers for the Crown Agents.rnFrom Peter Jaffe in "Cancelled by Perkins Bacon“, published for Spink & Son Ltd by James Bendon Ltd. (1998).rnrn1861/64: 5 d. chestnut, perf. 14-15½, perfs. trimmed at left, struck with large part CANCELLED in black. Position 5 on the Jaffe re-plating of the donated blocks of six - two examples (pos. 3 and 6) have yet to be found. Rare. Cert. RPSL (2016) Gi = £ 8'000.

1853: Entire letter from Port Phillip (Melbourne) sent registered to London rated 1/10d.' to pay on arrival, reverse with oval SHIP LETTER / MELBOURNE in red (Jan 1) and framed LIVERPOOL / SHIP arrival (April 2) in black and London cds in red. Somewhat soiled but an interesting letter with the writer sending a remittance to his father: "we have a pretty state society here, many of our characters' are a set of desperate fellows, chief part of them are old convicts out of their time, many escape from Van Diemen's Land which distance is about 4 favourable days sail from Port Phillip, they have no respect for life or property, the vagabonds are not contented with robbing the successful gold diggers on the country roads, but they must discharge a revolver, loaded with ball, through the thickest part of their victim's thigh, sometimes throiugh their hands against a tree. The bushrangers on the roads to the diggings, they go in gangs of 6 to 8 men all well armed with short rifle carbines, with their belts full pistols 'revolvers', all of them mounted on splendid running horses. Our horse Police in the bush find it a difficulkty to capture the wretches. ...". He goes on to discuss 'New Holland' and that the 'Swan River is 2'500 miles away and that if the hot weather continues the bush will catch fire. Rare and most unusual graphic account of life in the new continent.

Endorsed at top 'From No. 626, Private John Palmer, 57th Regiment' and counter-signed correctly at lower left by Major H. Butler commanding. 'London / Paid' cds in red on front (April 3) and reverse with Cambridge arrival cds in black. Some minor creasing to envelope as ever with Soldier's mail. The regiment had been stationed there for many years (see Gerald Ellott's monograph on the 57th Regiment in New Zealand, published April 2017, available at viewing in Zurich) with two Victoria Crosses awarded for gallantry at Allen's Hill in October 1863. This cover is mentioned in the Robson Lowe Encyclopædia, volume IV on page 404, and in the Stanley Gibbons Part One footnote - this is the only recorded multiple of this stamp - just eight examples being recorded, two of which are 'Dwarf' examples and one of those is in the British Library. Circular POSS. ANG. V. SUEZ / MARSEILLE datestamp in red. Reverse with GALLE STEAMER LETTER in red, 'Cette A Paris' TPO (Dec 26) and Bordeaux on arrival (Dec 27). 1864/71: 6 d. red-brown - five single examples, a pair, a strip of three and a strip of five, all used on 1867 registered cover from Okarito to Darmstadt carried via Panama on the 'Ruahine'. and cancelled by "C/5" obliterators in black. Three further 1864/71 1 s. yellow-green applied in transit at Hokitika, overlapping some of the 6 d. adhesives and tied there by "21" numeral obliterators (it is probable that Okarito had no 1 shilling values and that this cover exhausted their stock of 6 penny stamps). The addressee's name deleted and a few imperfections but with Hokitika cds on reverse (Oct 12), Christchurch cds (Oct 16) and 'Registered / London' oval on front in red (Dec 30).
