    1851: Remarkable tiny entire letter (63 x 33 mm.) with embossed colourless illustration of lady on horseback with wreathed "TO" below, endorsed "per Express" addressed to "J.C. Kindman, Present" and reverse with paper seal reading "IF YOU NEGLECT ME YOU LOSE ME". The love letter enclosed reads: "Agawam¹ '51, Tues. Eve; My dear Charles, Are you still in the land of the living? If so, permit me who am so much the younger of the twain to speak a word to thee. Why in the world do we not either see you, hear from you, or let us know the reason why? Do you know how it grieves me to see you so negligent? Oh! Charles! "You'll break my heart, I fear you will, if you continue so" ² If you do not write soon I fear you will never receive another such a long letter from me as this. Yours to the end, Hannah".rn1. Agawam is now Ipswich, Massachusetts.rn2. The quote in the letter comes from an old Kentucky song called "Fanny Gray, A Ballad of Real Life."rnA quite remarkable and most unusual cover.

    Air Mail 1932: Washington 3 c. purple, used on official First Transatlanic Flight cover from New York to Kaunas, Lithuanian, dated 15 July 1933, tied by Brooklyn duplex in black, carried on the ill fated 'Lituanica' which crash in Poland 650km away from the intended destination, with event postmark in black alongside the commemorative cachet in violet, cover number '270' (there being 983 sold to support the flight costs), to the reverse a Kaunas arrival dated 18 July 1933.rnNote: The 'Lituanica' was a Bellanca CH-300 Pacemaker airplane flown from New York across the Atlantic by Lithuanian pilots Steponas Darius and Stasys Girėnas in 1933. After successfully flying 6,411 km (4,043 miles), it crashed, due to undetermined circumstances, 650 km (404 miles) from its destination, Kaunas, Lithuania. Both pilots perished.

    Air Mail 1926 (May 23 - Oct. 11): Duggan, Oliviero and Campanelli  First Flight USA - Brazil - Uruguay -  Two covers flown from Rio de Janeiro to Montevideo, one franked by 1924/32 200r other by 100r and pair of 50r., both tied by Rio de Janeiro cds and neat "AVIÃO "BUENOS AYRES" / =RAID= / New York-Rio de Janeiro-Buenos Ayres" framed hs in violet black. Only ten covers flown, a rarity of South American early airmails. Covers minimal toned, otherwise fine and scarce.rnNote: Carried from Rio de Janeiro to Montevideo by the seaplane "Buenos Ayres", piloted by Bernado Duggan, E. Olivero and Ernesto Campanelli. According to the "El Correo Aéreo Rioplatense" handbook by Bousquet, the widow of Bernardo Duggan stated that ten covers were dispatched to Montevideo.rn

    1930 (May 11): First Successful Crossing of the South Atlantic by Jean Mermoz - Two special printed CGA envelopes from "Paris May 10 1930", one franked with 10f and 50c tied by 'Paris Gare Austerlitz' meter mark to Buenos Aires (May 14) and signed by Mermoz, other franked with 5f and 2f (2) to Pernambuco (May 13) signed by Jean Dabry, both envelopes with special cachet "PREMIER TRAVERSÉE COMMERCIALE / DE L'ATLANTIQUE-SUD / PAR UN HYDRAVION DE L'AÉROPOSTALE" in violet. A fine pair.

    The Makowski Flight from Los Angeles to Poland 1938 (May 13 - June 5): Airmail envelope from "Buenos Aires May 24" franked with 15 c. to Warsaw, carried by a team of LOT Polish Airlines personnel, headed by General Manager Major Wacław Makowski on their experimental flight from Los Angeles via Southamerica back to Poland in a Lokheed 14H Super Electra. Envelope with special flight cachet in violet and "Warszawa 2 "LOT" 5.VI.38.18" arrival mark on reverse. Fine and scarce.rnThe team delivered an L–14H Super Electra aircraft, the fifth Lockheed long–distance civilian passenger and cargo aircraft purchased by LOT (registration SP–LMK). They took off from Burbank, California, and, after touring back South America, crossed the South Atlantic from Natal, Brazil to Dakar,Senegal traveling 1,908 miles (3,070 km) in 11 hours 10 minutes, then via Rome to Warszawa. The distance covered was 15,441 miles (24,850 km) and the flying time was 85 hours, quite a feat at that time. The flight marked a milestone in air freight as, until then, airliners were delivered across the Atlantic as deck cargo on ships. See AIRPOST JOURNAL February 2013 article by Jerzy W.     Colonial 1824: Quarterly report from the Oruro Post Office dated at base December 31, struck at top with perfect strikes of abbreviated / truncated "RTA. DE CORREOS" Nacional "POR EL REY" and "ORURO" handstamps (Colareta figs. 3+4+5, almost certainly taken from this document) at top all in red. A magnificent document in the finest possible condition - and very probably the last such sent with the "POR EL REY" as Bolivia's Independence was secured the following year.

    1876: Prepaid cover front from La Chimba (later Antofagasta) to Montevideo via Magellan Straits, struck with "CORREOS DE BOLIVIA / LA CHIMBA / ABRIL 30 76", intaglio oval "CORREOS DE LA CHIMBA / BOLIVIA" with Steamer vignette and oval "CANCELLADO" all in blue - the sole, unique example of all three handstamps applied to the same cover - with Montevideo arrival (June 5) in black and tax mark "10" to pay. Alert Pkt.", struck on despatch by fine "RIO-JANEIRO" double arc despatch cds (May 21) in black (early usage, known from January only).     1877 (15 July): Entire letter from Rio de Janeiro to Langenthal, forwarded to Langnau, Switzerland, endorsed "p. Orinoque", bearing 1866 60 r. black perforated, scissor cut at right in mixed franking with 1877 Dom Pedro 200 r. black rouletted, tied by segmented cork cancels, with "RIO DE JANEIRO" despatch cds alongside, French "BRESIL / BORDEAUX" entry cds in blue (6 Aug) tying the lower adhesive. Reverse struck by BERN transit, and LANGENTHAL arrival (7 Aug), then LANGNAU on the same day. Interesting franking in the new 260 reis rate to Switzerland valid from July 1877 coming from the well known company Luchsinger in Rio Grande do Sul.

    1800/1845c.: The large collection from Colonial period onwards with covers/fronts (43), with 1816c. cover to Quito rated "16" reales with oval "REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA / LATACUNGA / FRANCA" in red, 1835 entire to Popayan rated "4" with "GUAIAQUIL / DEVE" in red, 1844/1849 entires (3) with "GUAYAQUIL / DEBE" in red, 1848 cover from Ambato with fine "FRANCA" and an 1848 cover and a front with "AMBATO / FRANCA" in red, prepaid covers or fronts from Alausi, Bolivar (with prepaid covers in red and blue), Cuenca, Guano, Guaranda, Ibarra, Latacunga (three with fine strikes), Otavalo (2, one in blue), Quito with prepaid marking in red and two "QUITO / DEBE" items in blue, Tulcan, and 1865 cover with framed "DE OFICIO" in black, incl. an 1835 printed form ex the Guayaquil Post Office detailing a letter to Paita. Many strikes very fine, a superb basis for continuation in this fascinating field.

    Issued Stamps 1871 (1 June): Double rate Entire letter from Guayaquil to Lima, belonging to the famous Chavez correspondence bearing two single examples of ½ r. greyish blue from a dry print run and three single examples of 1 r. olive-yellow, all cut intentionally narrow with one 1 reales adhesive cut in twice, tied by three clear strikes of FRANCA handstamp, reverse with light LIMA arrival (8 June) cds. A rare and unusual cover, the franking paying correct the 4 reales double rate to Lima.

    1873 (21 Feb): Cover from Guayaquil to Trujillo, Peru, this being a most unusual destination within this foreign country, franked at 2 reales single external rate within America, bearing 1 r. yellow-buff from the third period of printing in combination of identical denomination but different colour with 1 r. green, tied by crisp FRANCA dotted lozenge and GUAYAQUIL despatch cds.     1870/72: 1 real deep yellow on medium white wove paper, a fine unused block of 25, sheet margins with marginal framelines cut away, positions 46-50/82-86, with position 64 with "Indented Left Vertical Frameline" flaw and position 66 with "Diagonal Scratch from Centre Circle to Base" Plate flaw. The multiple shows insect bite at right of position 76, nevertheless of fresh colour and large part or unmounted og. Signed Bühler.

    1871 (26 Aug): Large cloth used for jurdicial correspondence and carried from Riobamba to Quito, bearing 4 r. pale rose in block of 17 originating from positions 49 / 59-62 / 72-75 / 85-88 / 98-101 from the base of sheet, together with 1 r. yellow-buff, tied by second type cds of RIOBAMBA, overpaying by ½ r. the 34½ ounces noted in manuscript. The cloth was was reused four days later and adressed back from Quito to Riobamba by applying 4 r. scarlet, a strip of three and a single, ½ r. blue and 1 r. yellow-buff, thus making up an infrequent three-colour franking including the 4 reales, all tied by QUITO cds in red.rnNote: The largest multiple known, in used condition, of the scarcest first issue value. The largest recorded franking in the classic period of Ecuador. Presumably, the most important item of Ecuadorean postal history and philately.rnProvenance: Collection Fiorenzo Longhi.
