    1858 (March 10): ½ peso yellow-buff, a superb four margined example, position 4 on the Transfer block, used on second page of February 1859 letter from Lima to Paris tied by "1-2-3-Lima" dotted handstamp in black. Reverse with British P.O. Callao double arc cds in black and London transit cds in red (April 5) with manuscript '16' (grams). Front with "GB/2F 87½c." accountancy marking in black and charged 24 décimes handstruck on arrival (double rate). The adhesive with a negligible scuff at base of no significance, a truly delightful and rare cover demonstrating a late usage of the ½ peso adhesive.     Lot# : 40 Guatemala

    1873: Lithographed 1 peso dull yellow, perf. 11¾, an unused block of four of rich colour, centred somewhat to left, the lower two stamps with thin spots and each with tiny black ink spots not greatly detracting from the frontal appearance, unused without gum. Despite the imperfections this is a magnificent block in the circumstances - whilst Lind / Goodman recorded eight pairs of this stamp (one used pair was recently sold by Corinphila in Moorhouse sale II, lot 4058) - this is the sole recorded block of four of this stamp.     1863 (Jan): Lecoq 1 p. brown, a fine example used with 1862 1 d. pink on 1863 registered cover from Lambayeque addressed to the famous senator General Juan Manuel Iturregui in Trujillo, the adhesives tied by dotted "LAMB." handstamps (Emsing E1) with extremely rare oval LAMBAYEQUE / ARROW handstamp at right (E24) with framed CERTIFICACION above and oval VAPOR at base (E83+E203) and the edges surrounded by four rosettes in black. Reverse with docketing of sender "Lamb.e Julio 22 de 1863" and "Iturregui" signature of acceptance. An outstanding cover of great rarity.rnNote: General Juan Manuel Iturregui (1795-1871) fought alongside and supported San Martin in the War of Independence and was elected Senator for the district of La Libertad in 1853, a position he held until 1871.

    U.S. - Consular Mail in the Levant 1833/1972: Group of 9 consular letters or envelopes, starting with 1833 letter from the Dragoman of the U.S. - Mission in Constantinople to the Dept. of State in Washington struck with Semlin sanitary h.s. on reverse, 1882 headed envelope 'United States Legation Constantinople locally used to Rear Admiral James W. Nicholson, the Commander of the US Fleet to protect American Citizens and the Consulate during the Anglo - Egyptian War, further four envelopes from the US Consulate in Sivas (Turkey) to Boston, of which two franked with Turkish adhesives, headed envelope 'American Consulate / Sanitary Report'  to THE SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY' in Washington D.C. franked with French adhesives and  tied by CONSTANTINOPLE-GALATA POSTE FRANÇAISE 23-9-13" as well as two rare 1972 envelopes from the U.S. Consulate in Algeria used after the Algerian Government declared the consulate to be in a forbidden military zone. Fine and rare assembly.

    Pacific War 1880c. Envelope probably mailed from Mollendo, addressed to Valparaiso and struck with fine framed FRANCA in black denoting concessionary free rate, applied over fancy circular "CORBETA CHACABUCO / Anchor / CHILE / HONOR Y PATRIA" in violet. Top flap missing, small imperfections and aging at edges of envelope but rare.rnrnNote: The Chilean corvette Chacabuco was a late 19th-century ship of the Chilean Navy. Commanded by Enrique Simpson in the early 1870s, the ship participated in the exploration of the fjords and archipelagoes of Aysén Region in northern Patagonia. In 1876 'Chacabuco' transported the Governor of Magallanes Diego Dublé Almeyda to the Falkland Islands bringing back sheep, thus initiating the Patagonian sheep farming boom of the late 19th century. From 1879 onwards the corvette fought in the War of the Pacific.

    1862/72: 1 d. green, the balance of the Exhibit collection on leaves with an unused strip of five pair and strip of five with gum; pair and strip of three cancelled by oval framed MOLLENDO handstamp range of usages in Callao, Iquique and Panama British Post Offices incl. a piece with Great Britain 6 d. buff; charming example with French Anchor cancel, straight line cancels on pairs used at CASMA, CUZCO, HUANCAYO and TARMA, oval AYABACA on pair in blue and strip of three cancelled by oval SICUANI, fine 1869 cover with single cancelled by PUNO straight line and another used to Bordeaux, double rate cover with pair and scarce triple rate cover with strip of three cancelled at Tacna in blue; also 1862 1 d. pink on covers (3) and 1872 1 pi. orange used (2, one on piece). A generally fine to superb group with much of interest (49 items).

    1862/63: 1 d. vermilion, a fine used example showing arguably the rarest cancellation found on the Le Coq issues: a superb strike of the framed Floral Rose handstamp "The Chanta Rosette" in black, this being the sole example with full oval frame (Lamy & Rinck fig 83 / Emsing E188). Illustrated in Emsing, an exceptional and a key item of Peruvian Postal History.rnNote: Chanta is a farmhouse and ranch located in the valley of Chanta to the Maranon, Huagayoc District, has 268 inhabitants. This postmark, according to Georges Lamy, was initially found on a letter dated December 19, 1866 mailed to Trujillo. As Chanta obviously had no Post Office, this was either a private production by the sender or applied in Huagayoc or Trujillo.

    1862: Lecoq 1 d. pink, a diagonally bisected used example, lower right half, tied to 1866 cover to Lima by 'Callao' cds in black with diamond LIMA / QUINTA / DISTRIBUC.N handstamp (Lamy & Rinck fig. 52) in blue-black ink alongside. Reverse with Lima arrival cds (March 7). A scarce usage. Signed Holcombe Gi 14a = £ 350/Scott = $ 350.rnNote: On 1 January 1866, the single letter rate by Train on the Lima-Callao and Lima-Chorillos lines was reduced by half, to 5 centavos. As no 5 centavos adhesives were available until the Llama issue of 6 June 1866, the 1 dinero value was officially authorised for use between these dates.

    1868: Lecoq 1 d. green, a fine example used on 1869 entire letter to Genova, Italy tied on despatch by "Lima" cds in blue (July 13) with British P.O: "Callao" cds at left of the following day. Mailed via London (Aug 14) and struck there with "GB / 1F 90c." Accountancy marking in black and, in Paris, by framed Convention marking "F.*58" in black (Van der Linden fig. 1198). Found to be above single weight and taxed at '28' décimes. Genoa arrival on reverse (Aug 17). A rare combination of markings on an attractive entire.

    British P.O.'s 1866/67: Llama 20 c. brown used on 1876 cover from Callao to Nantes, France in combination with Great Britain 1867 10 d. red-brown tied by bold strike of "C38" obliterator in black. Reverse with 'Callao' British P.O. despatch cds (May 22). Fine PANAMA / TRANSIT cds on front (May 29) and carried by French Packet 'Washington' with circular 'Ligne A / Paq. Fr. No. 2' cds (June 1) on reverse in black (Salles fig. 1401). Underpaid and taxed on arrival with '15' décime charge marking in black. Some edge wear but a rare and attractive mixed franking.

    1928 (Dec. 19): VUELO LIMA NUEVA YORK via BUENOS AIRES, pioneer flight cover carried by the Peruvian pilots Cpt. Carlos Pinillos and Lieut.Carlos Zegarra (Navigator) carried on the leg Santiago de Chile to Buenos Aires, franked with Chile 25 c. and tied by Santiago Maritima handstamp backstamped Buenos Aires same day, signed by both pilots. In addition 1929 original press photo: 'Peruvian Consul greets Flyers'  as well as part set of four picture postcards (Set I cards 1+4) and Set II (cards 3+8) cards, honouring the 1911 first official flight by Juan Bielovucic from Santa Beatriz over Lima and Callao above the Pacific coast.

Registration cachet at left with New York transit registration label above. Reverse with New York datestamp (June 15) and Leipzig arrival (June 26) in black.     1879: The ubiquitous ¼ real black on buff postal stationery card, the reply half, used locally within Guatemala City cancelled by octagonal "Correos / Guatemala" datestamp in violet (Feb 28, 1879). The card, with tiny corner wrinkles mentioned for accuracy, is addressed to a German businessman from the Franco-German bussinessman, Sebastián Chenal trying to collect on a debt. Whilst amongst the most common of all unused postal stationery cards (the stock was purchased for use as advertising cards by Errington & Martin, stamp dealers in London), the card in used condition can be considered a rarity.

The two 1 dinero adhesives paying the single rate which was reduced on 15 January 1863 to 1 dinero for a single letter, regardless of distance; twinned with a further January 1863 cover bearing a single 1 d. in the red shade, similarly cancelled (Jan 11) and used to pay the 'Under 25 Leagues' rate, in this instance between Lima and Callao thence to Valparaiso.
