    1380 (Aug 15): Entire letter from Filippo Dacca di Pesaro, serving on a ship (galley) of War marauding in the Adriatic Sea, written from Rhodes (Rodi) and sent to his uncle in Venice probably by way of Parenzo in Istria, with bold family Guild sign on address panel. Fascinating letter in Italian with full translation in English accompanying the lot - "We landed about Aug 1 at Capo D'Istria. There were 400 of the Patriach's men in the town but we captured the place without loss ... a number of traitors were given up and put to death ... we grappled with three Genoese galleys and came so close to one of them that her shots passed over our poop deck ... after I had written the above we stormed a place called Selessia, we then went on to Segna which we took by storm and sacked, we found iron, brass and timber there ...". A fascinating letter describing the constant War between the Venetians and Genoes.

Further manuscript on front probably the fee charged due on receipt "3.12" (3 tari 12 grana). A rare and most unusual entire.

    1853 (March 10): 10 c. black (2, one touched at the upper left, otherwise both stamps with broad margins all around) and 45 c. blue ribbed paper (broad margins all around), tied by three strikes of framed Milano datestamp (Müller 4157h) to outer letter sheet, sent to Ostende/Belgium with 'P.D.' in black and red BOLLO INSUFFICIENTE in oval circle alongside, 'Coeln Verviers' transit mark in black, ALLEMAGNE PAR HERVE Belgian transit mark in green (van der Linden no. 81), and Ostende arrival mark in red on reverse. Correct rate was 45 c. for the Vereinsporto and 30 c. for the Belgian part, the cover was therefore taxed. A very rare franking, not listed in Ferchenbauer, certificate Colla (2012).

    45 c. slate-blue, type II on hand-made paper in a block of four plus single, all tied by CREMA 7/7 datestamp to fragment of a registered letter with on reverse an additional 30 c. brown, type I on hand-made paper (corner cut away) for the registration, tied by two crossed strikes of one-line RACCOMANDATA. All the stamps were removed for quality control and replaced with hinges in their original positions, the rare block of four is touched at top while the other three margins are good to large.     Note: the March 30, 1852 convention between the Papal States and Austria was extended to include Denmark from Oct 27, 1852. The Danish share of the rate (3 bajocchi) was reduced on February 1, 1854 but not applied until late 1858 or early 1859.

    Sardinia 1857 (Oct 7): Unpaid cover from Turin to Aarhus, Denmark struck on despatch with "Torino" cds, thence via Culoz and reverse with Thurn & Taxis and Danish P.O. in Hamburg cds's (Oct 11). An interesting cover noted at top as weighing 11½ grams; therefore a double letter under Sardinian and French tariffs (single rate was under 7½ grams) but charged as a single letter on arrival: "8½" in manuscript on reverse in red crayon (2 sgr. Italian share, 2½ sgr French share, 1 sgr. Belgian share and 3 sgr. German share). The total postage charged was 44 skilling, double that to pay for a letter via France to Sardinia.

    1944 (Feb): Social Republic, 50 lire violet, Firenze/Florence printing with carmine lake "carminio lillaceo" overprint, the magnificent mint corner marginal block of four from top left of the sheet, third stamp with unlisted variety with the axe overprint shiftet to the base and all four stamps showing the surcharge overlapping 'Poste Italian' tablet in error. The block is fresh and very fine with minor paper adherence in the top of the margin only, all four stamps being perfect with unmounted original gum. A splendid and extremely rare multiple, only 450 stamps overprinted thus. Certificate Colla (2012) Sassone = EUR 27'500.
