    1911: Dirre Daoua Manuscript Provisionals, the superb mint set of seven values overprinted "AFF EXCEP / FAUTE TIMB" with values in manuscript, all in fresh and fine blocks of four, six of which are sheet marginal; the 2 g. on 2 g. brown with minor splitting, otherwise in superlative condition for these rarities. BN 14th PUNJAB REGT. (PATHANS)" at lower left counter-signed by Commanding Officer. Forwarded by Diplomatic Courier and franked by India Official 1 a. chocolate and tied by "Aden Camp" cds (July 2) in black. Exceedingly rare cover, the 127 soldiers in Addis Abeba protected British subjects during the War, for further information see Sciaky addendum, page 39.

    1879: Italy 20 c. orange used on 1886 cover to Messina, boldly tied by "3862" numeral obliterator with corresponding "MASSAUA / (MAR ROSSO)" datestamp at right (Aug 1) in black. Reverse with Brindisi transit cds (Aug 25) and arrival cds on reverse. Some ageing to envelope but a scarce cover. Note: Massawa was occupied by Italy on February 5, 1885 displacing the Egyptian influence. A Post Office was opened on February 22, 1885.
